Phonics

Q : What are phonics ?

A : Phonics are the sounds that make up the English language

Q : What are graphemes ?

A : Graphemes are the letters or letter groups associated with the phonics.

For example 'ch' is a grapheme. It has 2 different sounds associated with it 'ch' as in chin and chemist.

The 'Letters and Sounds' programme proposes a phased approach of introducing different letter groups and sounds. See 'Letters and Sounds' page.
